ABOUT OHIO SB310

A 2011 report issued by the USDA has confirmed Ohio ranks sixth among the top 10 states with the largest number of USDA Class A licensed commercial breeders. With this fact, NBAS wonders why rescues are the target of SB 130.

In my opinion, rescues that do not breed for financial gain are being held to a stricter regulation than those that are commercially breeding dogs. Under this proposed bill, rescues would be required to provide a list of all foster homes to the Department of Agriculture.

Adoption fees would also be required to be approved while commercial breeders would have the opinion to charge whatever price they wish. Additionally, foster homes would have the constant threat of anyone filing a complaint be it factual or erroneous. Upon inspection of the premises, the dog could be confiscated and not returned to the rescue group.

There are numerous other aspects of this bill that will hinder the work we do as a group. I encourage you to read the bill in it's entirety. This is no longer a puppy mill bill as there are no standards of care and commercial breeders would only be inspected every two years.

Another source of information is the summary from the Animal Law Coalition.

Foster Homes Needed

Since we are in the process of raising money to build a shelter we use a foster care system. to provide homes for the dogs we rescued until they are adopted. We are consistently pulling dogs and cats from bad situations including kill shelters. These animals need love and a chance to just be a pet. Please email fosters@newbeginningsas.org if you can provide a loving temporary home. NBAS provides the vet care and food. You provide the love!
